Teeth

When Dr. Adamson looks at your teeth in relation to your smile there are numerous factors she will take into consideration.

She will look at the health of your teeth and at any previous dental treatment you may have had and review if you are missing any teeth.

She will discuss the shade, shape and size of your teeth. The shade of your teeth can be improved through whitening and yet keep them looking natural. Teeth Whitening is available from £220 per arch.

Before & After Porcelain Veneers

We can improve the shape and size of your teeth through cosmetic bonding. Bonding involves adding tooth-coloured filling material to your tooth. This is less invasive and more cost effective than porcelain veneers or crowns. Full Cosmetic Bonding is available from £395. There are still times where porcelain veneers and crowns are the recommended option and these are available from £950.

Dr. Adamson will review any staining and whether those stains are intrinsic (discolouration on the inner layer of the tooth) or extrinsic (superficial discolouration that can be removed through professional cleaning).

Before & After Tooth Whitening

Tooth alignment and position is another important factor to consider with Smile Design and this can be resolved through clear aligner treatment like Invisalign.  It is important to understand that straight teeth are not necessarily pretty teeth.  As part of a treatment plan to align teeth Dr. Adamson may do cosmetic bonding to improve the shape and size of the tooth.  She will consider the end-position of your teeth in relation to your lips when smiling, talking and at rest along with the amount of gum visible and the alignment of your teeth at gum level.

Gums

You may well take your appearance seriously and that will often include your smile and teeth, however people don’t necessarily think about their gums from a health and beauty point of view.

Healthy gums (gingivae) come in a variety of shades, mainly pink however they can be darker in colour which is more common with darker skin tones. Healthy gums are firm and tight around your teeth.

Gummy smiles, gum recession and gum disease can cause aesthetic concerns for patients (along with health concerns in the latter two conditions).

Dr Audrey Adamson - Gums

Anti-wrinkle treatment can be used to treat a ‘gummy smile’. A more aesthetically pleasing smile will still show the beautiful pink of your gums but normally no more than 2mm will be exposed when you smile.

A build-up of plaque (from inadequate oral hygiene) can cause gum disease (gingivitis). This causes your gums to become tender, swollen, red, inflamed and prone to bleeding. This is all reversible however if left unmanaged it can develop into advanced gum disease (periodontitis).

Gum recession is common, it can be associated with one or multiple teeth. Gum recession is where the margin of the gum on your tooth pulls back exposing more of your tooth and this can cause both health and aesthetic issues. This can make your teeth, smile and overall appearance look older. There are ways to improve the appearance of this once the health of your gums is treated first.

Treatment options include veneers (thin shell of porcelain bonded to your tooth) or composite bonding (bonding tooth-coloured filling onto the tooth), both of which can mask the appearance of black triangles. With the veneers and with composite bonding it’s possible to also use a pink colour at the neck of your tooth to mimic your gum and provide a natural anatomical tooth length.
